About
Day 1 dives into AI's role in urban planning, starting with an introduction to AI and its societal impacts. It explores issues asscoated on AI's influence on citizen behaviour at work and home. The day progresses through AI's applications in urban infrastructure and development, discussing real-world scenarios and smart city technologies. Interactive discussions and workshop segments allow for hands-on learning, with a review of some research to be undertaken prior to day 2.
Day 2 focuses on AI in urban transport, community engagement, and strategic planning, examining case studies and ethical implications. Discussions on AI's impact on urban planning jobs and the profession provide insights into future trends will be included. The day concludes with an in-depth look at ethical issues surrounding AI in cities, including data privacy and human-AI collaboration. The session will include both presentations and interactive sessions to facilitate active participation and deeper understanding.
Session Presenter
Stephen Yarwood MPIA (Fellow), Urban Futurist, City2050
Passionate about cities and innovation, Stephen is a well-known and respected contemporary City Planner who consults nationally and internationally as an Urban Futurist.
The former Lord Mayor of Adelaide and founder of city2050, his expertise lies in urban governance, city strategy and policy, smart cities and urban transformation. He has broad and practical knowledge of the driving forces, trends, issues and opportunities associated with technology and its relationship to best practice urbanism, governance, infrastructure and community development.
He has previously worked in Local and State Government and in the South Australian Parliament as a research officer and is a fellow of the ACG次元网 (PIA).
Stephen is a CitySpeak Australia podcaster and keynote speaker who has spoken extensively around Australia and in many other countries.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the basics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its potential impact on urban planning and city management.
- Identify current and future applications of AI in urban planning and city management.
- Analyse how AI will change infrastructure, development, transport, community engagement, strategic planning, urban governance and citizen behaviour.
- Evaluate the potential impact of AI on urban planning jobs and the ACG次元网 profession as a whole.
- Develop strategies for integrating AI into urban planning and city management practices to create healthier, more sustainable, and equitable communities.
- Develop an understanding of the ethical considerations involved in the use of AI in urban planning and management, and be able to identify potential sources of bias and unfairness in AI systems.
- Understand the importance of data privacy and security in the use of AI in cities, and identify strategies for ensuring that sensitive data is protected.

- Explore the legal and regulatory frameworks that govern the use of AI in cities, and understand the role of planners and policymakers in shaping these frameworks.
- Gain an understanding of the importance of public perception and acceptance in the success of AI in cities, and develop strategies for promoting transparency and building trust with the public.
- Develop an understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with human-AI collaboration in urban planning and management, and identify best practices for designing effective interfaces and workflows that support collaboration between humans and machines.
