Negotiation is front and centre of whats required to be an effective and successful town planner!
This short course is designed to equip town planners and related professionals with essential negotiation skills to navigate confidently within the planning context. Negotiation is a crucial aspect of town planning, as it involves working with diverse stakeholders, addressing conflicting interests, and finding mutually beneficial solutions. Participants will gain practical insights into effective negotiation strategies tailored specifically to the field of town planning.
The course will provide an overview of the theories about successful negotiation, successful examples of negotiated outcomes, and examine practical ways to practice effective negotiation in everyday professional life.
The course will provide learning and examples of:
- An overview of alternative dispute resolution processes
- Negotiations in development assessment – from both sides of the table – Government and applicant side
- Negotiation in the Planning and Environment Court Mediation Process
- How to plan for a successful negotiation
- Key ‘Do’s’ and ‘Don’ts’ in negotiation
- Negotiation techniques and strategies
- Key skills and tips for de-escalating and resolving conflicts.
The course will also hear of real examples of negotiation processes from town planners with extensive practical experience in both the private and public sector. Content will be delivered through presentation, interactive learning and role plays to enhance the learning experience. Come ready to learn and practice negotiation!
Designed for:
This half day training programme is designed for town planners and other professionals working on development applications and other planning related areas where resolution of issues is required. It may be especially useful to young planners, allied professionals who are required to operate within the development assessment framework and planners new to Queensland or wanting a refresh.
The course is suitable for public or private sector employees and is intended to provide skills and strategies no matter what side of the argument you might be on!
Furthermore, it will be of particular relevance to all town planners who are interested in the interplay of their work with the Planning and Environment Court.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this course attendees will have gained:
- an appreciation and understanding of negotiation theories
- skills, strategyies and practical steps for negotiations
- examples of negotiated outcomes in the ACG´ÎÔªÍø process
- some practice in negotiation with their peers!
- appreciate what happens in a mediation and the different role of participants; and
- an awareness of their own individual skill sets they may adopt when aiming to resolve conflict.
Presenters:
John Gaskell RPIA (Fellow)
John is the founder and Director of Gaskell Planning Consultants (GPC), a firm of town planners providing a range of expert planning services to the private sector, local government and state government in Queensland.John has over thirty five years’ experience in the ACG´ÎÔªÍø profession, ranging across a number of development assessment and strategic planning roles.
John has extensive private sector experience having led numerous complex development approval processes across Queensland. He is well regarded by local authorities and government in Queensland and his ten years of local government experience provides an excellent basis for many ACG´ÎÔªÍø projects that require a thorough knowledge of local government planning requirements.
John provides expert planning advice on complex development applications, public-private partnership projects, local and state ACG´ÎÔªÍø policy matters and expert witness services for the Planning and Environment Court and Land Court. John’s standing in the ACG´ÎÔªÍø profession was recognised in 2015 when he was made a Fellow of the ACG´ÎÔªÍø
Simon Grice MPIA
Simon is an experienced town planning consultant with working knowledge across Queensland. He has worked in private consultancy and public sector roles in Townsville and Brisbane, providing policy advice, development assessment and planning litigation services. Simon has assisted clients in securing approvals for a variety of development types and project scales across education, health, commercial and residential sectors.
Simon has shown strong leadership through his career managing complex and challenging major development projects as well as mentoring graduate and student planners through professional development.
With a bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Urban Planning with Honours and over 15 years’ experience in private consultancy and local government, Simon brings his broad expertise and great insights to ensure the success of each project.Simon's industry affiliations including the ACG´ÎÔªÍø, Property Council and UDIA.
