Introduction to Heritage Management
This half-day session will be run as a mix of traditional seminar-style and workshopping of case studies to give attendees an insight into the key considerations for understanding heritage in the planning context.

Where did Heritage Conservation come from and what is the ICOMOS Burra Charter
By introducing the beginnings of heritage conservation, the attendee will be able to understand why we protect heritage places and what are the benefits of heritage conservation on urban and regional planning.
We will also discuss what is the ICOMOS Burra Charter and its processes and principles, and how it shapes our statutory framework. It is expected that the attendee will understand what is meant by heritage values, heritage listings, HERCON Criteria and the differences and similarities of Heritage vs Character Areas.

How do we manage heritage in WA?
The statutory framework includes the relevant acts and regulations guiding heritage management. We will present the various heritage-related report types, such as Conservation Management Plans, Heritage Impact Statements, Heritage Agreements, Heritage Assessments, Interpretation Plans and the role of heritage professionals.

Managing Heritage Outcomes
In this session we will discuss heritage values, what are statements of significance and how are they relevant to managing heritage outcomes. The attendees will be exposed to principles of assessing change to heritage places and in heritage areas including the key considerations of bulk, form, scale, setback, curtilage, setting, materials and juxtaposition of new and old.
